Darling Girl Eyeshadows - Precious Fairy Vagina, Fort Delaware, Fairy Floss, Lil Ass Kicker and YMB2017! Swatches & Review

Indie eyeshadows honestly have the best names ever. Not many brands give you the opportunity to say 'thank you, it's called Precious Fairy Vagina' when asked about your makeup (aptly, this was during a stretch and sweep while overdue with my daughter. I strongly advise against googling) but Darling Girl will go there. The name of that eyeshadow, if you're curious, comes from a line spoken by the wonderfully acidic Pam in True Blood, but it's not the first or last hilarious shade name from DG, as you'll find out in this set of reviews. Here's the usual lowdown:

Product size:
Darling Girl's eyeshadows come in a few different sizing options: full sizes are packaged in 5g jars with approximately 3/4 tsp of product ($7USD). Petits are packaged in 3g jars with approximately 1/4 tsp of product ($3.25USD). You can also try a sample set, which includes 4 shades of your choosing in baggies, each containing 1/8th tsp for $5USD. I've gone down that route many times as you can get samples of any eyeshadows, Diamond Dusts, Spectral Shifts or loose blushes, excellent if you want a great cross section of colours and formulas to try!

Formula overview:
Darling Girl's eyeshadow formula is incredibly consistent. I've never come across a dud in the range; they are, on the whole, very pigmented and easy to work with. Some shades, especially the more glittery ones perform best over a sticky base but can certainly be used on their own.

Swatch notes:
All eyeshadow swatches in this post are done two ways: applied on bare skin on the left hand side and over Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy, a sticky eyeshadow base which maximises colour intensity and sparkle, on the right. This is so you can see how they perform both ways. I take all of my photos with daylight bulbs for colour accuracy.

Precious Fairy Vagina (discontinued) is described as a 'peachy gold with violet sheen and gold iridescence'. On my skin, the base colour is a dirty cream and the violet sheen is very strong, especially over a sticky base. It still shines through when worn sheerly, as I've shown on the inner corner in the look a little further down.

Fort Delaware

Fort Delaware (discontinued) is described as a 'taupey plum with shifting iridescence'. I was a little surprised at just how strongly it pulls plum on me as it looks more taupe in the jar, but there ya go. I have no complaints though, Fort Delaware is gorgeous and very unique in my collection. It doesn't require a sticky base to perform well, though it pulls more purple with one.

For this look, I've used Precious Fairy Vagina on the inner half of the lid (over a sticky base) and on the inner corner (no base), Fort Delaware on the outer half of the lid and lower lashline, Tempting Tryst on the crease and Hot As Baelfire to blend out. The lashes are Ardell #110s

Fairy Floss (permanent) is a warm dusty peach with strong green shimmer that shifts to purple in some lights. The interplay between warm and cool tones makes for a wonderfully complex eyeshadow that is very versatile in action. Layer it over a dark base, as I did in the look below, and the peach base disappears altogether, making the green shimmer all the more vibrant in its wake. Fairy Floss applies and blends easily and is a must have from the permanent range.

Lil Ass Kicker (discontinued) is a medium warm purple with gold sparkles and shimmer. It reminds me quite a bit of Fyrinnae Meerkat but Lil Ass Kicker has a more pigmented base colour and the gold shimmer seems to shift to green at certain angles. Persuasion Diamond Dust (permanent) is a similar mixture of purple and gold, but has a brighter base colour. All in all, Lil Ass Kicker is one of the less unique Darling Girl shades in my collection but still one I'm happy to have.

I've used Fairy Floss on the inner third of the lid and on the lower lashline over smudged out liner, Lil Ass Kicker on the centre of the lid, Celebration on the outer third of the lid and Borrowed Underpants on the inner corner. I also used Burnout from the ColourPop Weekend Warrior eyeshadow palette on the crease and the Lorac Nude Skinny palette to blend everything out. The lashes are Ldianer 208 'mink' lashes from Ebay.

You're My Bitch, 2017! (YMB2017!) (permanent) is an unapologetically bright copper with blue sparks and plenty of shimmer. Initially released as a limited edition shade to celebrate Susan tackling the new year, it was subsequently added to the permanent range by popular demand. YMB2017! is at its best with a sticky base as the metallic pigments really need it to adhere properly but is totally worth the effort, in my opinion.

Here, I've used You're My Bitch 2017! all over the lid, My Cat Loves Me on the inner corner, Pere Foutterd on the lower lashline, Burning Love on the crease, Naughty Bits to deepen the crease and #breaktheinternet for the transition. The lashes are these ones from Ebay in style 523
