MAC MONDAY | Bao Bao Wan Lipsticks Swatches & Review

MAC's 2015 Bao Bao Wan collection first appeared rather quietly in July of the previous year, when the four lipsticks and beauty powder from the collection briefly appeared on the MAC website as an apparent glitch. They were snaffled up quickly by those with quick trigger fingers but no one knew what collection they came from or whether the colours would be back until many months later, when Bao Bao Wan was at last announced. The 'mystery collection' release had originally come in MAC's standard black packaging, but the final form is what you see in these pictures: dark, umber brown rubberized packaging with teal green shimmer giving it an overall frosted glass look. Bao Bao Wan's signature and the MAC logo are printed across the lower half of the tubes in gold, further enhancing the luxe feel.

Bao Bao Wan herself is a designer of fine jewellery and a socialite hailing from Beijing, China. Her MAC collection took inspiration from the fine metals and jewels she works with and was filled with rich tones and glistening finishes. Besides the lipsticks I have to show you today, there was a shimmery beauty powder (Summer Opal), a Veluxe Pearlfusion eyeshadow palette (Bao Bao's Jewels) and three nail polishes, all in pearl finishes (Kashmir Blue, Imperial Green and Sunset Tourmaline). I still hope to get my hands on the beauty powder and eyeshadow palette one day!

Formula overview:
Of the four lipsticks in this collection, three were mattes while Romantic Breakdown was the lone lustre. MAC's mattes are one of my favourite formulas and these three were very true to form: super pigmented and velvety in texture. Lustres can be a little more hit or miss, sometimes being drying, but I didn't have any issues with Romantic Breakdown. MAC lipsticks have a vanilla scent.

Romantic Breakdown

Romantic Breakdown is described as a 'sheer nude' in a Lustre finish. As nudes go, I suppose it isn't the most unique and is most comparable to Shy Girl in the permanent range, although less orange. Nevertheless, it's a lipstick I really like for a slightly lighter nude option than I often reach for, and it's more forgiving than options like Japanese Maple and Hue. It wore for four hours on me and wasn't drying.

Forbidden Sunrise

Forbidden Sunrise is described as a 'creamy orange' with a Matte finish. I absolutely love this shade of orange, I hope MAC repromote it some day! It was mostly gone after five hours wear and was minimally drying.

Burmese Kiss

Burmese Kiss is described as a 'bright coral pink' with a Matte finish. I'm a total sucker for MAC's corals and can be counted on to snap them up regardless of how many potential dupes I own, but even I'll admit that there are likely dupes for Burmese Kiss. Previous LE shades Party Parrot and Toxic Tale are both close (and probably close enough for those aren't quite as fiendish about hoarding coral lipsticks). It wore for five hours on me and wasn't drying, though it did stain.

Lavender Jade

Lavender Jade is described as a 'dirty mauve with gold pearl' in a Matte finish. I'm really only able to detect any hint of pearl when I look very closely at the lipstick in the tube, it doesn't translate in application for me at all. Regardless, it's a gorgeous colour and if you're a fan of purple you'll be pleased to hear that Lavender Jade was added to MAC's permanent range a while ago! When I tested for wear, it lasted for five hours on me and wasn't drying.

What I liked:
  • Great colour pay off
  • Most shades weren't drying
  • Gorgeous packaging
  • Wear time was between four and five hours.
What I didn't like:
  • Forbidden Sunrise was minimally drying

ColourPop Lippie Stix - Chi Chi, Go Fish, Clique and Yasmin Swatches & Review

ColourPop Lippie Stix - Chi Chi, Go Fish, Clique and Yasmin Swatches & Review

Wheeeeee, it's time to delve back into my hoard of unblogged ColourPop lipsticks (I have a ColourPop problem, okay?) and witness more of my unwavering obsession with the coral-orange spectrum. Yes, I'm predictable and no, I'm not sorry.

ColourPop Lippie Stix - Chi Chi, Go Fish, Clique and Yasmin Swatches & Review

ColourPop Lippie Stix - Chi Chi, Go Fish, Clique and Yasmin Swatches & Review

The packaging for the Lippie Stix is a glossy white twist up slim tube with a slanted lip bullet. I really like the smaller surface area of this lipstick style as it allows a more precision than your traditional larger teardrop shaped bullet. Each lipstick has a coloured end cap which matches the colour inside as well as a label with the name and finish (eg satin, matte, glossy).

ColourPop Lippie Stix - Chi Chi, Go Fish, Clique and Yasmin Swatches & Review

Formula overview:
The Lippie Stix formula seems to be divisive among makeup lovers but personally, on the whole I really enjoy it. I have a mixture of mattes and a Hyper Glossy in this selection and I've found the texture, pigmentation and application to be great across all formulas. The mattes have a very subtle tackiness and a smooth, slightly creamy texture. They can be a little firmer on the lips than some of ColourPop's other Lippie Stix finishes, but they don't drag or tug in any way. The Hyper Glossy finish is one I tend to struggle with, and I assume I wasn't the only one as it's been discontinued altogether - most of the colours I tried feathered terribly within half an hour of application, but Go Fish fortunately was not one of them.
They are all pretty forgiving of flaws, good news for those who struggle to keep pesky lip flakes away!
The Lippie Stix have a gorgeous chocolate chip cookie scent - it smells just like the Rainbowlicious Chocolate Chip scrub to my nose, which means I'm basically in heaven every time I pop the cap off one of these. SO good.

Chi Chi

ColourPop Lippie Stix - Chi Chi Swatches & Review

Chi Chi is described as a 'bright true orange in a matte finish'. Holy wow, this is deliciously bright! Chi Chi is not a starter orange, you definitely have to be committed to the orange lipstick cause for this one. Fortunately, I am, 'so last season' claims be damned. Chi Chi lasts five and a half hours on me without feathering or drying out my lips.

Go Fish

ColourPop Lippie Stix - Go Fish Swatches & Review

Go Fish (discontinued) is described as a 'vibrant coral red with a Hyper Glossy finish'. It is indeed super glossy and has beautiful colour pay off. The other Hyper Glossy shades I've tried have been feathery messes, so I'm so glad this one worked out as the shade is by far my favourite of the Hyper Glossies I bought. It lasted for five hours without feathering and was somewhat clingy.

Clique

ColourPop Lippie Stix - Clique Swatches & Review

ColourPop Lippie Stix - Clique Swatches & Review

Clique is described as a 'vivid true orange red in a matte finish'. While Clique is bright, it's a smidge deeper, darker and redder in tone than Chi Chi - total justification for owning both, right there. It lasted for five and a half hours and wasn't drying.

ColourPop Lippie Stix - Clique Swatches & Review

Yasmin

ColourPop Lippie Stix - Yasmin Swatches & Review

ColourPop Lippie Stix - Yasmin Swatches & Review

Yasmin (discontinued) is described as an 'electric coral with a matte finish'. It's strongly on the orange side of coral (no complaints there though) and is vividly pigmented with a more matte finish and stiffer texture than Chi Chi and Clique. Yasmin wears for six hours on me and stains.

ColourPop Lippie Stix - Yasmin Swatches & Review

What I liked:
  • Wear time ranged between five and six hours
  • Non feathering
  • Non drying
  • Excellent colour pay off
What I didn't like:
  • Yasmin has a stiffer texture than many of ColourPop's other mattes
  • Go Fish is somewhat clingy

Maybelline Color Drama Lip Pencils - Light It Up, Red Essential Swatches & Review

Maybelline Color Drama Lip Pencils - Light It Up, Red Essential Swatches & Review

I received a few of the Maybelline Color Drama Lip Pencils for review last year and I was so enamoured by them that I had to pick up a few more when I spotted them on sale at a local pharmacy a while back. They were clearing out their Maybelline stock so had them for something crazy like 40% off - these babies are already easy on the wallet with their RRP of $9.99, so I was thrilled to pick up two gorgeous shades of red even cheaper.

Maybelline Color Drama Lip Pencils - Light It Up, Red Essential Swatches & Review

Formula overview:
These have a lovely creamy texture which allows them to glide across lips without tugging or pulling. They have excellent colour pay off, delivering fully opaque colour in a single pass. I found two of the three shades here to be mildly drying and wear time averaged around five and a half hours. There was no staining from any of them and they don't settle into lip lines or feather, rather they wear away very evenly, so you're not left with a ring of colour.

Maybelline Color Drama Lip Pencils - Light It Up, Red Essential Swatches & Review

These are petite pencils, shorter and chubbier than NARS' Velvet Matte Lip Pencils although they surprisingly contain 0.1g more - 2.4g (NARS) vs Maybelline's 2.5g. You'll need to sharpen them, leading to some inevitable product wastage. I highly recommend chilling them before sharpening though, as I've had them break during sharpening before and create a big smushy mess which is an absolute nightmare to get out of the sharpener!

Light It Up

Maybelline Color Drama Lip Pencils - Light It Up Swatches & Review

Light It Up is a cheerful, bright red - a more youthful, Minnie Mouse red than Red Essential. It's a lot of fun to wear and applies wonderfully, lasting six hours on me without any migration/feathering issues or drying.

Red Essential

Maybelline Color Drama Lip Pencils - Red Essential Swatches & Review

Red Essential is a dramatic, classic red with blue undertones. If you love show-stopping reds like MAC's Russian Red, you'll definitely love Red Essential. It has excellent colour pay off and wears for six hours on me without feathering or drying out my lips.

What I liked:
  • Excellent colour pay off
  • Smooth application
  • Lasted for six hours
  • No feathering or migration
  • Non drying
What I didn't like:
  • Difficult to sharpen
Where to buy:
  • Selected pharmacies, supermarkets and department stores, RRP $9.99

LA Girl Flat Matte Pigment Gloss - Fleur, Playful, Obsess, Frisky and Black Currant Swatches & Review

LA Girl Flat Matte Pigment Gloss - Fleur, Playful, Obsess, Frisky and Black Currant Swatches & Review

LA Girl, always a brand on top of creating affordable alternatives to popular lippy formulas, released their liquid matte lipsticks a year or so ago to much excitement in the beauty community. There are 16 on-trend shades in the range, covering everything from the quintessential nudes to classic reds and vampy purples with plenty in between. I picked up a bunch of them in an array of colours a while back, so let's take a look!

LA Girl Flat Matte Pigment Gloss - Fleur, Playful, Obsess, Frisky and Black Currant Swatches & Review

LA Girl Flat Matte Pigment Gloss - Fleur, Playful, Obsess, Frisky and Black Currant Swatches & Review

 Formula overview:
The Matte Pigment Glosses apply like lip gloss, with a smooth and not overly runny consistency. Most shades apply evenly, but pigments that are typically problematic, such as those with a white base, neon pigment or the ever finicky purple, cause the usual issues with streaking or cakiness.
I didn't find the formula drying, but it can feel heavier on the lips than some liquid mattes and thus more noticeable and potentially uncomfortable during wear. If you prefer a lighter formula, these are probably not for you.

Fleur

LA Girl Flat Matte Pigment Gloss - Fleur Swatches & Review

Fleur is a light terracotta shade with great colour pay off. This is my favourite of the ones I chose, the formula gave me no trouble and the shade is unique in my slew of nude & neutral lipsticks. It lasted for five hours on me.

Playful

LA Girl Flat Matte Pigment Gloss - Playful Swatches & Review

Playful is a neon pink with yellow leanings (LA Girl's promo swatch depicts it as a medium plummy-pink, which is pretty confusing and as you can see, wildly off base). It was streaky and difficult to even out, making the final application somewhat cakey. It lasted five hours on me and wasn't drying.

Obsess

Obsess is a warm strawberry red. It applied really nicely and wore for seven hours without being drying.

Black Currant

LA Girl Flat Matte Pigment Gloss - Black Currant Swatches & Review

Black Currant is a dark, warm purple. It was incredibly streaky and stained pink strongly almost immediately, causing the pink to show through the streaks and surrounding lip line, further emphasizing the uneven finish. It lasted seven hours on me and wasn't drying.

LA Girl Flat Matte Pigment Gloss - Black Currant Swatches & Review

What I liked:
  • Most shades had good colour pay off
  • Wear time was between five and seven hours
  • Non drying
What I didn't like:
  • Black Currant is very streaky and the strong staining emphasises this
  • Playful is streaky and somewhat cakey
