Maybelline Bold Matte Lipstick - Mat6 Dark Red Swatches & Review

Hey lovelies,

How is your Easter weekend going so far? I'm not sure what we're doing today. Hopefully relaxing, but will probably catch up on a bit of housework too. We're such exciting people :p

Anyway, much more exciting than my life is this new lipstick from Maybelline: Mat6 from the Bold Matte line!

The Bold Matte line is fairly new to New Zealand, having only been released in the last month or so. It's been around for a bit longer in other countries, though I don't think they've come to the US, oddly. It's kind of weird to have something here that isn't available in the States since we're usually so far behind! Anyway, the Bold Matte line is a small collection with shades that seem to vary from country to country although we do seem to have the same shade range as Australia.

The packaging of the Bold Mattes is similar to the Vivids range but the caps have a frosted glass matte effect which I really like. One thing I dislike about the packaging is that the shade name isn't printed anywhere - it's just listed as 'Mat6', I only found out it was called Dark Red while checking Maybelline's website for more information.

Mat6 Deep Red is exactly that, a dark red that leans brown. It reminds me a little of Lime Crime Glamour 101, it's a lovely 'grown up' red.

Mat6 Dark Red has a bit of sheen initially but dries down to a more matte finish. It's definitely not the flat matte of Lime Crime Velvetines or MAC Retro Mattes, but it's significantly more matte than MAC Satins. I wore it over lipliner (shown below) and wear time was pretty good - 3 1/2 hours before mostly wearing away with food. It was neither hydrating nor drying (although Maybelline claims the Bold Matte lipsticks are enriched with honey nectar for 'visibly moisturised lips'). The texure is lightly creamy and easy to apply, it doesn't skip or drag across lips.

A FOTD with Mat6 Dark Red - and bonus grumpy baby Patrick :)

What I liked:
  • Great colour pay off
  • Lasts 3 hours + (would last longer without food as it wasn't showing signs of budging before a meal, but I need to eat!!)

What I didn't like:
  • Didn't live up to moisturising claims for me
  • The shade name isn't printed on the packaging - just the number.

Where to buy:
  • Selected pharmacies (Maybelline lip products are currently buy 1 get 1 free until the 27th of April)
  • Farmers (Maybelline lip products are currently buy 1 get 1 free until the 22nd of April)
  • The Warehouse (Same BOGO deal, not sure when it ends)
Maybelline have been running a BOGO deal on their lip products for a few weeks as part of their Get A Little Lippy campaign, which you can check out here.

Have you tried any of the Bold Mattes?
