Favourite Beauty Products: 2012 Edition [PICTURE HEAVY]

Hey lovelies,

2012 was a busy year for my make up collection. I accumulated a lot of new favourites, and rediscovered some old ones. Here are 18 beauty products I loved this year, in no particular order.
As with my favourite nail polish post (which you can find here), click on the name of the product to see the blog post I originally featured it in.

1. MAC Russian Red Lipstick

It took me a long time to warm up to Russian Red. I got a tube back in 2010, wore it once, decided it was too dark for me and promptly destashed it. Later I got a used tube in a bulk lot of cosmetics on Trade Me and decided to de-pot it, sanitising it with heat in the process. Forgetting of course, that once I've depotted a lipstick I never use it again because I (used to) hate applying lipstick with a lip brush (I'm working on that). When the Wonder Woman collection came out, I wanted something with the packaging - the life of a MAC addict - and none of the other shades appealed, so I decided I would make Russian Red work, dammit. And I did. Unexpectedly, I fell head over heels in love this time around, and have never looked back! These days it's my go to red - I know it wears well, won't feather and makes me look and feel fabulous. Well done, MAC.

2. Revlon Raspberry Bite

I picked up Raspberry Bite at Postie for $8 earlier this year because my friend Nikita had bought it on a previous shopping trip together and I thought it looked amazing on her. It took me a month or so after buying it to try it on myself, but when I did, wow! I love how much it flatters my skin, the deep raspberry pink sets me all aglow. Highly recommended for fair skins, but I think just about anyone could pull this off.

3. Maybelline Master Precise Liquid Liner
Maybelline Master Precise Liquid Eyeliner

This is my second tube of Maybelline Master Precise Liquid Eyeliner this year! I think I get through liquid liner faster than I do mascara :) This is no Shiseido Fine Liner, my old favourite, but it's $50-60 less so much more palatable to my budget! Good pigmentation, easy to use and a flexible fine tip that makes winged eyeliner a breeze - including this in my 2012 favourites was a no-brainer.

4. Essie Fill the Gap!
Essie Fill the Gap!

Essie Fill the Gap is the first full size base coat I've used right down to the dregs - it's that good. It does a great job of filling in ridges and gives polish a lovely smooth canvas. I'd repurchase this for sure if New Zealand pharmacies didn't all seem to be getting rid of their Essie stock!

5. Sleek Palettes
Sleek palettes - Storm, Oh So Special, Original and Au Naturel

Sleek palettes

Don't make me choose a favourite! Alright, if you forcing me, I'd say Storm - despite the rather battered condition Noel has left it in! Seriously though (clockwise from top left in the top photo), I have Storm, Oh So Special, Au Naturel and the Original palette now, and they are all pretty darned awesome. I'll definitely be replacing Storm, and I'm lusting after Respect, Snapshots and Acid at the moment. The Sleek palettes are for the most part highly pigmented, blendable and flattering. Some of the mattes lack a little punch, but at these bargain prices, there are enough hits to make up for it. Shop for Sleek here.

6. Dior Incognito palette
Dior Incognito palette

Oh, Incognito. One day I'll find another of you. This is a palette I have loved to death. Or at least a lobotomy! No more perfect brown shimmer :( The white shimmer at the top right is also amazing, it's like a more subdued version of MAC Vanilla pigment - great when you want a glowy eyeshadow highlight, but don't want the full she-bang of Vanilla.

7. Clinique Sunburst Duo - beige shade
Clinique Sunburst duo

As you can see, the shimmery beige in my Sunburst duo has been well loved! I'm always hunting for a replacement on Trade Me, but haven't found one yet. I was going to link to a FOTD featuring this eyeshadow, but a quick search on the blog shows I use this on just about daily, haha! A great neutral shimmer that blends well - impossible to get wrong.

8. MAC Diva lipstick
MAC Diva lipstick

Sorry, I can't find my tube of Diva for the life of me! Probably hiding somewhere in the car (it's where my lipsticks all go when they don't want to be found!) - but I did manage to find a picture of me wearing it.

9. MAC Lightscapade MSF
MAC Lightscapade Mineralize Skin Finish

Lightscapade is a cult favourite with MAC junkies for a reason. Those soft pastel colours in the pan impart a barely there glow to cheekbones which never emphasizes pores and always looks gorgeous. I wear this just about every day.

10. Wet N Wild Megalast Red Velvet lipstick

Red Velvet is exactly what I wanted Revlon Strawberry Suede to be - a creamy matte red that leans pink enough to lend a retro sweetness to any make up look. The clincher? It's only $2.75USD on Beautyjoint. WINNER. (Technically this arrived in 2013, but I ordered it in 2012 :p)

11. MAC Patisserie Lipstick

Sadly, my tube of Patisserie fell out of my car and rolled down a drain about a month ago. But it's very high on my list of beauty products to replace, because it's the perfect no-fuss nude lippy and I was down to the last centimetre when I lost it. That never happens with me! I just love this lipstick so much - it's absolutely a my lips but better shade.

MAC My Paradise blush

I've continued to love this blush this year, and if I'd been blogging in 2011 I know it would have made the list then as well. Despite the regular love I give it, you can't tell from the pan - I doubt I'll ever finish it, which is a relief because it was limited edition! This is amazing for warming up my pale cheeks, and I only need the tiniest bit.

13. MAC Hibiscus Lipstick

Hibiscus is the lipstick I choose whenever I need a pick me up. It's so flattering, doesn't feather and the colour is to die for. The only downside is that it was limited edition, so one day I may actually need to locate a back up!

14. Seche Vite Topcoat
Seche Vite top coat

Seche Vite is the quickest drying top coat I've ever used - necessary with a toddler! I flirt with other top coats from time to time, but always come back to Seche Vite.

15. OPI Avoplex Cuticle Oil To Go
OPI Avoplex Cuticle Oil To Go

A new addition to my handbag this year was OPI Avoplex Cuticle Oil To Go. This handy little tube is great to chuck in your handbag and easy to apply anywhere with the squeezy tube and brush tip. I like applying this at my desk at work while pondering something important. Helps with the decision making!

16. YSL and unbranded make up brushes!
YSL and UBL eyeshadow brushes

I've had these blending and crease brushes (the top two) by YSL for years, but only started using them regularly in the past year or so. They were part of a gift with purchase, and were stored neatly in their pouch in my make up cabinet and forgotten! Rest assured they are getting the love they deserve now, and I use them daily. The blender is great for smoothing out harsh edges and applying inner corner highlights, and the crease brush is small and firm enough for detailed creasework. Finally, the shader brush you can see is one I actually I have several identical ones of. It's a $2.37 brush from Uncle Bills, of all places. The brush is dense enough to pack on colour, doesn't shed and at that price you can pick up several and always have a spare when you're too lazy to wash your brushes.

17. Ardell Lashes
Ardell #120 False Eyelashes

I love me some Ardell lashes - I've been purchasing them for years now and will continue to do so! The lash bands are always super flexible and light weight, the lashes are great quality and you can re-use them over and over if you take care of them. Here I'm wearing the #120s. The #110s are great for a natural look, and I adore the Demi Wispies for dramatic eyes.

18. YSL Rouge Volupte #27 Rose Paris
YSL (Yves Saint Laurent) #27 Rose Paris lipstick

Last but definitely not least, #27 Rose Paris by Yves Saint Laurent. Although the formula and colour are divine in their own right, I'll always have a soft spot for this lippy because I wore it the night before I gave birth to Noel. Here I am wearing it before going out for a dinner of shepherds pie with Michael the night before our lives were forever changed by our amazing little dude. Man, I craved so much pub food when I was pregnant with Noel. I'm still convinced he caught wind that we were out for sheperds pie and decided to stay in a few days longer so he could have it too!
